Last week, I had the pleasure of presenting with Dr. Leonard (also Len) Rodberg about our research on California’s 2045 clean energy roadmap. Spoiler alert: It barely reduces our reliance on fossil fuels despite a colossal deployment of renewables.
Dr. Rodberg and I shared our minute by minute modeling, demonstrating the challenges of relying solely on solar, wind, geothermal, batteries and imports. I hope our research will help California leaders and members of the public understand that a better plan would combine renewables with nuclear, saving us from an expensive and inneffective overbuild of transmission, storage and grid balancing technologies.
To summarize our research:
1. Our current plan keeps us heavily reliant on natural gas forever. Check the graph for a glimpse at an average day in 2045...
2. Flexible, scalable, and emission-free solutions like nuclear energy can enable renewables to decarbonize our grid.
3. Social justice and affordable energy go hand-in-hand, and both demand that we legalize nuclear energy in California immediately.
If you agree, please write your California legislators a note requesting a more effective clean energy policy that lifts the state's 50 year old moratorium on nuclear energy. You can also connect with me personally to get involved in the growing environmentalist movement to #LegalizeNuclearEnergy
