Musky New Deal
Governor Newsom has an opportunity to transcend our overreliance SolarCity/Tesla and their Elon-endorsed solar+storage+degrowth bufoonery.
As a Berkeley hippie, this podcast about shutting down our oil refineries was a cold water wake up.
Our state is closing three refineries (SF, LA and OC) while our economy still runs 84% on fossil hydrocarbons.
This means higher prices on everything, and much higher emissions from crude imports from Iraq and the Amazon. It means everyday pain for working Californians. It means diminishing our energy leadership in the United States and around the world.
All for miniscule air quality / carbon difference.
As environmentalists, we should support responsible in-state oil production with our world-leading regulatory environment instead of pushing it out of sight and committing environmental / humanitarian harm to other important ecosystems.
And of course we need to legalize new nuclear energy in California immediately. If we’re serious about ecosystems, equity, and reliability, we should be building dozens of reactors.
Governor Newsom has a unique opportunity to move away from our overreliance SolarCity/Tesla and strike a much better course than the anti-physics Muskian New Deal which overindexes on solar+storage+degrowth
Professor Mische’s report on California energy policy and it’s effects on gasoline (headed towards $8/gallon), diesel, jet fuel and pharmaceutical prices is eye-watering.
This is fixable and the California Governor's Office of Business and Economic Development (GO-Biz) and California Air Resources Board should be convening parties around this big idea.
